The winter months bring scores of Humpback whales to the protective waters of Banderas bay to court mates and birth their calves. How does one describe being right up close to the largest mammal on the planet? (Rhetorical question. Preferably, one does NOT describe it. One experiences it.)

June through October, Olive Ridley turtles come ashore in San Pancho to lay their eggs & you can bear witness as their hatchlings emerge a few months later. The local Turtle Project has been responsible for the release of over a million baby turtles in San Pancho. Perhaps you’ll be the next volunteer?
A BIRDWATCHER’S PARADISE, more than 300 species are to be found along the coast and in the mountains around San Pancho. Hummingbirds, pelicans, woodpeckers, flycatchers, orioles, doves, hawks, thrushes and sparrows are common sights.
The bordering jungle - the highest (latitude) tropical jungle in the world - is home to scores of exotic mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and bird species. Though not such a common sight, as they tend to be a bit more private, shall we say, there is a notable jaguar population which is stewarded by the San Pancho-based Jaguar Alliance.
The region is also known for its floral diversity & the Orchid Ranch is an easy 1/2 hour jungle hike from Escucha.
